Podiatry Degree and Other Podiatry Alternatives

Earning a podiatry degree is the first step to a rewarding career. In order to become a United Kingdom state-registered podiatry practitioner, you must earn a podiatry degree. This entails taking and passing a full-time honors podiatry degree program. The podiatry degree can only be earned at one of only 13 schools of podiatry in the UK. Competition is fierce for the limited number of seats available in school of podiatry programs.
Those who do not wish to pursue a degree, at least not right away, can gain some experience by working as a podiatry assistant. Podiatry assistants work in clinics to assist podiatrists in many different environments, including private practices. You can get training for being a podiatry assistant when you are employed. The training program requires at least 500 hours of clinical experience. It also includes oral assessments, theoretical assessments, and practical assessments.
Another option is to become an orthotic technician. The purpose of an orthotic technician is to measure, construct, and maintain correction aids inside shoes called orthoses. Being an orthotic technician is not an unimportant job. They work in conjunction with orthotists, prosthetists, and podiatrists to help people stay ambulatory.
Some podiatric practitioners might take some time off away from their practice. If they desire to return to work, there are currently no government regulations to prevent them from doing so. However, they will probably be required by their employers to re-take some sort of training class. For those in this position, returnees should contact their local podiatry school to find out whether they are administering any sort of refresher courses. They might also be able to allow former practitioners to sit in on lectures or clinics. In addition to educational requirements, practitioners should also check and make sure that their state registration is up-to-date. To do so, they should contact the Health Professions Council.
While a refresher course at the school of podiatry can be a huge benefit, it will also benefit practitioners to attend more general courses. Practitioners can find course details and descriptions in the Podiatry Now Journal.
